What's the difference between SLS and ILS?+
Supported Living Services (SLS) help adults live in their own homes with personalized 24/7 support tailored to their needs. Independent Living Services (ILS) teach the skills needed to live more independently — budgeting, cooking, transportation, and self-advocacy. Both are funded through California's Regional Centers.
Who is eligible for services?+
Adults (18+) who are clients of any California Regional Center with a qualifying developmental disability diagnosis. Bism is vendored with the Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center (FDLRC) as our home region, and welcomes inquiries from clients of any LA-area Regional Center — including NLACRC, ELARC, Westside, Harbor, SCLARC, and SGPRC.
How do I get started?+
Reach out to your Regional Center service coordinator and request Bism as a vendor, or contact us directly and we'll walk through the referral process with you.
What does a typical day look like?+
Every day is shaped around the person, not a schedule. Some days are quiet and routine. Others involve community outings, work, classes, or visits with family. Our role is to support — not to direct.
Are your staff trained for neurodivergent adults?+
Yes. All Direct Support Professionals complete onboarding in person-centered planning, positive behavior support, and trauma-informed care, with ongoing training thereafter.

The IPP, demystified

What goes in, what comes out, and how to advocate inside it.

The Individual Program Plan (IPP) is the document that shapes the services your loved one receives from the Regional Center. It's rebuilt every year — or sooner, after any major life change — in a meeting with you, the Service Coordinator, and anyone else who knows the person well.

What it covers

  • Goals — what the person is working toward this year
  • Services authorized to support those goals
  • Who is responsible for what, and by when
  • Health, safety, and emergency contacts

Where it gets stuck

  • Goals copied forward from last year without revisiting them
  • Services described in generic language no one can hold to
  • Important voices missing from the room

What helps

  • Bring written notes about what's changed since the last IPP
  • Ask "how will we know it worked?" for every goal
  • Invite the people who actually spend time with your loved one
  • Push back on language that doesn't sound like them

You can request an IPP meeting any time — not just at the annual review. If the plan stops fitting the life, the plan needs to change.

Choosing a vendor

Questions worth asking before signing any service contract.

Choosing a vendor is one of the biggest decisions in the IPP process. The right one feels like a partner; the wrong one feels like another system to manage.

What to ask

  • How long does your average Direct Support Professional stay?
  • How are they trained — and on what?
  • What's your ratio of clients to coordinators?
  • Who answers the phone at 2 a.m.?
  • What's your process when something goes wrong?

What to listen for

  • Specifics, not slogans
  • Willingness to say "I don't know, I'll find out"
  • Stories about people, not policies
  • Comfort with being asked hard questions

What to watch for

  • Promises that feel too tidy
  • A focus on filling shifts rather than fitting people
  • Reluctance to share staff turnover numbers
  • Pressure to sign quickly

You can always change vendors. But finding the right one the first time saves months of disruption — so trust your read of the room. If it doesn't feel like a match, it isn't.

Regional Center 101

Roles, timelines, and the language of eligibility.

California's Regional Center system is the front door to services for adults with developmental disabilities. There are 21 Regional Centers across the state, each covering a geographic area. Services are funded by the state and are free to anyone who qualifies.

Who qualifies

  • A diagnosis of intellectual disability, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or a closely related condition
  • The condition appeared before age 18 and is expected to be lifelong
  • The condition results in substantial functional limitations

How it works

  • An intake call begins the process
  • Eligibility is determined through records review and assessment
  • Once eligible, a Service Coordinator is assigned
  • Services are written into the IPP and authorized by the Regional Center
  • Vendors (like Bism) deliver the services and bill the Regional Center directly — there is no out-of-pocket cost to the family

Typical timelines

  • Intake to eligibility decision: usually 60–90 days
  • IPP development: within 60 days of eligibility
  • Service start: depends on vendor availability and the complexity of the plan

The Service Coordinator is the person you'll work with most. A good one knows your situation, returns calls, and helps you navigate. If yours doesn't, you can request a change.

Planning a transition

From family home, group home, or school — what to expect.

Transitions are the biggest moves in adult life. Out of a family home, out of a group home, out of school — each one is its own process, and none of them happen overnight.

Start earlier than you think

  • Begin conversations with the Regional Center 12–18 months before the target date
  • Build skills first — cooking, transportation, money, self-advocacy
  • Visit and tour potential living situations early
  • Talk openly about what's working and what isn't in the current setting

What to plan for

  • The week the move actually happens
  • The first month, when routines are still forming
  • The first six months, when both independence and homesickness can surface
  • The first year, when the new normal starts to settle

What helps

  • Consistent staff who know the person before the move
  • Routines that travel with the person, not get rebuilt from scratch
  • A back-up plan if something doesn't fit
  • Permission to take it slow

There is no "right" pace for a transition. The right pace is the one that lets the person feel like they chose it.

Bism Supported Living, LLC (also referred to as Bism, Bism SLS, and Bism Supported Living) is a California Department of Developmental Services vendored provider of Supported Living Services (SLS) and Independent Living Services (ILS) for adults with developmental disabilities across Los Angeles County. Bism is vendored with the Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center (FDLRC) under vendor number PD4210 as our primary regional center relationship, and welcomes referrals from clients of any California Regional Center who choose to work with us — including, but not limited to, FDLRC, the North Los Angeles County Regional Center (NLACRC), Eastern Los Angeles Regional Center (ELARC), Westside Regional Center (WRC), Harbor Regional Center (HRC), South Central Los Angeles Regional Center (SCLARC), and San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center (SGPRC). We are a small, person-centered agency serving neurodivergent adults — including adults on the autism spectrum, adults with intellectual disabilities (ID/IDD), adults with cerebral palsy, adults with epilepsy, and adults with co-occurring conditions.

Bism's deepest current service capacity is in the FDLRC catchment area — including Burbank, Glendale, Hollywood, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta-Montrose, North Hollywood, Pasadena, Sunland, and Tujunga — but services are not limited to these cities. We can serve adults anywhere in Los Angeles County where the Regional Center authorizes services with us.

Supported Living Services (SLS) in California

Supported Living Services help adults with developmental disabilities live in their own homes — apartments, houses, or shared residences they have chosen — with personalized support that can scale up to 24 hours a day. SLS is authorized through the Regional Center under the Individual Program Plan (IPP) and is paid for by the State of California. Common SLS supports include daily living assistance, behavioral and medical coordination, community access, transportation support, and roommate matching. Bism delivers SLS as one of several California SLS vendors.

Independent Living Services (ILS) in California

Independent Living Services teach the practical skills required to live more independently: budgeting, cooking, transportation, navigating medical appointments, self-advocacy, and time management. ILS is delivered in real-world settings, paced to the individual. Bism delivers ILS as one of several California ILS vendors.

Anyone interested in services can reach Bism by phone at (207) 518-1374, by emailing info@bismliving.com, by using the Request Services form on this site, or by asking their Regional Center Service Coordinator to add Bism as a vendor option in their IPP. Bism is open to vendoring relationships with any California Regional Center. There is no out-of-pocket cost to the family or the individual — services authorized in the IPP are billed directly to the Regional Center.
